Whatever You Do, Don't Go On Another Diet

I've gained and lost over a thousand pounds in my life. I've been anorexic, sixty pounds overweight, and every point in between. I've been on The Atkins Diet, The Prunes and Meatball Diet, The Thousand-Calorie-a-Day-Sugar Diet, The Coffee-Diet-Creme-Soda-and-Cigarette Diet, Weight Watchers, and water fasts. All of them worked for a week, a month, even a year. And then every single one of them stopped working. This is why:

1) The fourth law of the universe is that for every diet, there is an equal and opposite binge. Diets aren't free. You will rebel, and when you do, you will gain more weight than you lost. As fat as you feel now, you will feel--and be--fatter after the binge that follows the diet.

2) The basic message of a diet is that if you let yourself go, you will devour the universe. You cannot say anything to yourself physically that doesn't also affect you emotionally. When you diet, you tell yourself that YOU can't be trusted, that your hunger (for love, fun, pleasure, friendship) will destroy people. And you begin to believe you are hopeless, a bottomless pit. This is not a kind thing to say to yourself. It also is not true. No one's hunger is bottomless.

3) Deprivation, fear, shame and guilt do not now, and never will, lead to long-lasting change. Beating a child might force her to conform to your wishes, but it will also make her so frightened that her focus will be to avoid another beating, not to understand her motivation or the reasons it is necessary to change.

4) Long-lasting change can only come through kindness to yourself, curiosity about what you are doing, and a willingness to act on your own behalf. Diets are like having a mean, abusive parent inside your head. Diets keeps you stuck in being a cowering child.

Not dieting does not equal binge-ing. Not dieting does not equal going numb or unconscious. You might desperately want to change, you might be wholeheartedly ready to lose weight. You might be ready to discipline yourself, to be conscious of what, when and how much you eat, but dieting based on shame, deprivation and fear is not that way.

You can lose weight and keep it off without dieting.

I promise.
