Like everyone else, I keep hearing the bad news from Wall Street and the global markets. Sounds pretty dark, doesn't it? But you know what I'm always telling you: Your experience is a reflection of your own perceptions. So I decided to change mine. Last week, I told myself I was going to find money in unexpected places. I pictured a $5 bill in a pair of jeans I hadn't worn in a while, or maybe a few coins in the car ashtray. What I found was better than that.
By the time I was paying my credit card bill in the afternoon, I had forgotten all about that morning's decision to find money. On the bill, I noticed that I had accumulated lots of points. Points? I didn't know this card gave me points. I called the 800 number, and a woman told me that I could exchange my points for stuff from various online stores. I asked if I could have money, instead. She said she'd ask a supervisor. When she came back, she said I could get a check in the mail. I asked if she could just deduct that amount from my credit card balance. She had to find out. "Yes," she said when she came back. "We'll credit your account for $375. It may take up to 3 days to process." Fine with me! The next day I received a check from our homeowners insurance company for $251. The letter said they'd re-evaluated our policy, and they owed us. Sounds like money in an unexpected place to me! In the same week, I got some new clients and experienced several other forms of good financial fortune.
The change for me didn't happen when my eyes were fixed on a graph with a line headed south or on photos of traders with their eyebrows furrowed. The change happened as I reset my expectations to YES. It will work for you, too. Give it a try, and let me know what happens.
